Tighter border controls on air and sea routes to end 80 years' free movement Fifteen million a people a year who travel by air or sea between Britain and the Irish Republic will face formal passport checks for the first time in more than 80 years, under immigration legislation published Thursday according to The Guardian. But no compulsory passport checks are to be imposed on the 224-mile land border between the republic and Northern Ireland, although ad hoc "intelligence-led" immigration checks will be carried out by mobile teams of Border Agency staff. Ministers say the proposal in the citizenship and immigration bill will "plug a critical gap" in Britain's border security as they introduce the multibillion pound "electronic border" over the next five years. The programme will enable travellers to be checked against watch lists before they get on the plane or ferry. MORE>>> |

The Irish Government has announced plans to take complete control of Anglo Irish Bank, saying its previous plan to inject money into the bank is not the best way to secure its viability. Anglo Irish Bank's chief executive David Drumm and chairman Sean FitzPatrick resigned last month in a controversy over secret loans to directors. Its finance director and chief risk officer Willie McAteer resigned last week. The Government had planned to inject €1.5bn into the bank, taking 75% of the voting rights in the process. Since reaching a peak above €17 in mid-2007, shares in Anglo Irish have plummeted, and closed at just 22 cent in Dublin today. MORE>>> |

Dublin Ireland: TAOISEACH (Prime Minister) BRIAN Cowen will use a new €160,000 S-Class Mercedes in coming months, despite his initial refusal to accept it. The car was bought after Mr Cowen’s appointment in June without his knowledge. It was to replace a similar model used by his predecessor Bertie Ahern. Mr Cowen refused to use the vehicle on the grounds that it would send out the wrong message to the public at a time of financial cutbacks. The decision to buy it was taken by the Department of Justice following the departure of Mr Ahern, who kept his S-Class Mercedes after he left office. However, the car could not be sent back to the supplier without significant loss. Mr Cowen, who uses an E-Class Mercedes which has significant mileage on the clock, is now expected to take delivery of the replacement in coming months. The Department of Justice said: “A replacement Mercedes S-Class was ordered for the current Taoiseach in the normal way and was delivered some time ago to Garda Headquarters. The Taoiseach, however, in the light of the changed financial and economic circumstances, decided not to take delivery of this car and instead to retain his current Mercedes E-Class for as long as possible. Dublin, Ireland: THE management at Anglo Irish Bank, whose value has plunged from €8 billion in July 2007 to €280m, is trying to head off a possible nationalisation following the collapse of its share price. David Drumm, the chief executive, has told employees that senior executives are working on a plan to recapitalise the bank. Drumm gave no details, but it is likely to involve institutional shareholders and wealthy individuals, including existing shareholders, pumping hundreds of millions or euros into the bank. It has been reported that the Anglo management sought government assistance to “underwrite” the fundraising from these investors, effectively asking the state to buy any outstanding shares that investors did not take up. The request is said to have been refused. Without fresh capital from private sources, the state may be forced to take over Anglo in order to prevent a triggering of the taxpayers’ €480 billion guarantee of the banking system. MORE>>> |
