A working visa and work authorisation scheme has been introduced in Ireland to make it easier to recruit suitably qualified people from non-European Economic Area countries for certain categories of employment where skill shortages are particularly acute. The scheme makes it possible for prospective employees with job offers from employers in Ireland to obtain immigration and employment clearance in advance from Irish embassies and consulates. Immigration Officers retain discretion in specified circumstances to refuse entry to any non-national. The new scheme does not replace but is a faster alternative to the work permit procedure that continues to be available in Ireland.
The scheme, which has been in operation for a reasonable period of time is a good avenue for those with the necessary skills to legally move to and work in the Republic of Ireland. Completed applications are in normal circumstances expected to take 8 weeks to process although this is known to take a much lesser time for straight forward cases where all required documents have been supplied. At present the designated categories are:
Working visasIf you have a passport from a country whose passport holders require a visa to enter Ireland and you have an offer from an employer in Ireland of employment in one of the designated sectors, you may be given a working visa by an Irish embassy or consulate.
