Picasa from Google is a free software that you can use to organise your photos and has a crop facility. Use the manual mode and draw a box roughly where you think you should crop the photo. Once you apply, you should be able to see the new photo's size just below it. This may be higher or lower than you want so you hit the 're-crop' button and adjust by moving the sides of the box, re-trying several times until you get the right size. If the photo is of very high resolution, you may need to use the export as webpage facility to export the photo and reduce the resolution to say 640, then work with the new image. It is not a difficult thing to do but you will need to play around with it probably several times before you can get it right.
